Legacy automakers are pivoting to electric vehicles in response to expected strong consumer demand, tougher environmental regulations both from US states and foreign countries, and a push from Wall Street. Electric vehicles have outpaced growth of traditional internal combustion engine (ICE) cars in recent years. But automakers bucked Trump and agreed to meet tougher standards set by California rather than the Trump administration’s rules. At a Detroit battery plant Wednesday, Trump said America didn’t need what the factory produced“This plant, we just walked through this plant and the electric vehicles are gonna put [automakers] out of business,” Trump said. Trump’s proposals could undermine US companies’ EV investments and hand over control of an increasingly EV future to foreign manufacturers.

Wall Street, I'm sorry to say your 2023 bonus is already on some shaky ground. I realize we're not even halfway through the year, but after an awful first quarter, bonuses in plenty of areas of finance are trending in the wrong direction. It's a mixed bag, with some areas trending toward a double-digit percentage increase over 2022, while others are heading the opposite way. If that isn't a certainty, you can bet people, especially those earlier in their career, will look for greener pastures. Jon McNeill served as president of Tesla, COO of Lyft, and has started and sold six companies. Over the same period the number of new funds closed has fallen by more than 75%, meaning capital is concentrating in fewer and larger funds. "That's all about addiction to fees," said McNeill, "it's not like they've got twenty times the amount of opportunities to fund, they don't." It's a venture fund, but it also bears resemblance to a private equity fund, an incubator, and a sort of "private Berkshire Hathaway" as McNeill puts it. The fund takes 100% of the company up front, as opposed to the 20% stake a VC fund would typically take.
